"Assignment #10--Oedipus"

Oedipus the King as a dramatic number of themes. They are all embodied in the characters themselves. The main character Oedipus personifies the theme of blindness, ignorance and darkness. Besides these, he descovers the dark truth. The action that helps him find out this truth is "he will kill his father and sleep with his mother". Indeed this truth does help the reader understand the King's ignorance which is his blindness. Oedipus believes that he is superior to the average man, which I don't doubt. However, he is one that misses the fact. The fact of what the prophet Teiresias told him. This blind man could see the darkness of Oedipus's behavior. His behavior was one that made even the clergy sad. His behavior and feelings towards his real father lead him to take his life, thus in blind anger. All in all, he is not intelligent out all. He finds out the person he slept and wed was him mother. This is where his blindess gets him. His removal of his own eyesight is the literal price he pays.
